Elise and Mike are both outward looking painters. The visible world around them forms the arena in which meanings are questioned in a light-hearted way. It is always about painterly points of view. What position does the work take? How does the meaning shift when certain works are placed together? The way of seeing is influenced by photography, usually used as a mnemonic or to isolate images in a larger whole. It is the snapshot quality in particular that stands out; accidental, but controlled compositions. For both, the freedom of painting is paramount; it is about the painterly translation of the idea. After all, it always starts with the idea, which leads by principle and must take form through the adventure of painting. During this adventure, however short it may sometimes be, sharp direction must be taken over the image that emerges. After all, unforeseen flukes, accidents and slips determine the final performance. The tension of the instant decision, of embracing what arises, is a condition for a successful work for both artists. (Lieven Hendriks)
The Introducing series focuses specifically on young and emerging artists who we believe should be introduced to a wider audience. These artists show promise in their work, attitude and methods and are ready for the future in these turbulent times.
